How to Scrape Facebook Group Posts and Comments to CSV
Facebook has no export button for group posts. Meta retired the Facebook Groups API in 2024, so there is no official way to download a group's feed either. What is left is a tool that reads the group the way you see it in your browser.
This guide shows how to do that with the Reddit Comment Scraper extension, what the CSV contains, how long a run takes and when a cloud scraper fits better.
What you need
- Google Chrome on a computer.
- A Facebook account that can open the group. For a private group, that means a member account.
- The Reddit Comment Scraper extension on the Starter plan or higher. The free and Pro plans cover Reddit only.
Step by step: scrape a Facebook group
- Install the extension. Add Reddit Comment Scraper from the Chrome Web Store and sign in to it.
- Open the group. Log in to Facebook in Chrome and open the group's main page, such as
facebook.com/groups/yourgroup. To keep only posts on one topic, you can instead search the group for a keyword and open that search page. - Choose how many posts. Click the extension icon. It shows "Facebook group detected." Pick 10, 20, 50, 100 or All posts. It starts with the newest posts.
- Add a keyword (optional). Type a word in the "Only posts that mention…" box to keep only the posts that use it.
- Click Scrape Comments. The first time, Chrome asks you to allow Facebook access. The extension then opens Facebook in its own window. Keep that window visible on screen, because Facebook only loads posts that are on screen.
- Wait for the run. The extension opens each post and reads its comments. Rows save to History while it runs, and Stop keeps what it has so far.
- Download the file. Click CSV, JSON or Google Docs, or copy the rows.
What the CSV contains
Each post and each comment is one row. A post row comes first, then the comment rows under it. With the default settings, the columns are:
| Column | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Author | The name of the person who wrote the post or comment |
| Time | When it was posted, as Facebook shows it |
| Subreddit | The group name. The column keeps its Reddit name. |
| Type | post or comment |
| Replying To | The post the row belongs to, named by its first words |
| Thread Level | 0 for a post or a top-level comment, 1 or more for a reply |
| Is Reply | Yes or No |
| Comment | The text of the post or comment |
| Links | Links inside the text |
Turn on permalinks in the extension settings to add a link to each post and comment. To read the file, filter Type to post for the feed, or sort comments by post to see each discussion.
How long it takes, and the limits
- About 10 seconds per post. The extension opens every post to read its comments. 100 posts take about 17 minutes. A large group on All can take hours.
- All means the whole feed. The run stops at the end of the group, with a ceiling of 50,000 posts.
- Keep the window on screen. Facebook loads posts only while its window is visible. If you cover it, the run pauses. After about 10 minutes covered, it stops and keeps what it has.
- Facebook may ask you to log in again during a long run. Log in, then start again. Rows saved before that stay in History.
- One group at a time. It runs in your browser. It is not a scheduled crawler.
Other ways to get Facebook group posts
Copy by hand
For five or ten posts, open each one, expand the comments and paste them into a sheet. It is free, but slow, and you lose the structure.
A cloud scraper for public groups
Apify's Facebook Groups Scraper reads public groups on Apify's servers and exports JSON, CSV or Excel. In October 2026 its free-tier price was $0.005 per post, plus a small charge per run. It cannot read private groups, because it does not use your Facebook login. Use it when you track many public groups on a schedule.
The Graph API
Meta retired the Facebook Groups API in 2024. The Graph API still covers Pages you manage, not group feeds. For comments on Page posts and ads, see how to export Facebook comments.
Use group data with care
Group posts often hold personal stories. Ask the admins before you export a private group, keep the file to your own research, and remove names before you share findings. Follow Facebook's terms and the group's own rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you scrape Facebook group posts?
Yes, with a tool that reads the group in your own Facebook login, such as the Reddit Comment Scraper Chrome extension. Meta retired the Facebook Groups API in 2024, so there is no official export for group posts.
Does it work on private Facebook groups?
Yes, if your Facebook account is a member and can see the posts. The extension reads only what your account can open. Ask the group admins before you export a private group.
How long does it take to scrape a Facebook group?
About 10 seconds per post, because it opens each post to read its comments. 100 posts take about 17 minutes. A large group can take hours. Rows save to History while it runs.
Can I scrape only the posts about one topic?
Yes. Type a keyword in the "Only posts that mention…" box, or open the group's search page for that keyword before you start.
How much does it cost?
Facebook groups are on the Starter plan, $49 a month or $399 a year. The free and Pro plans cover Reddit only.
